Stablecoins vs. Tokenized Deposits: Where the Money Sleeps
Ask ten people to explain the difference between a stablecoin and a tokenized deposit, and you may hear the terms used interchangeably at least half the time. Both are "tokenized money." Both live on a ledger. Both settle in seconds. But treating them as the same instrument is a category error with real consequences, because the two designs give the holder a legally opposite claim, put the underlying cash in opposite places, and pull the banking system in opposite directions.
This post unpacks a comparative research analysis of regulated stablecoins, tokenized bank deposits, and traditional fast payment systems, focusing on the sections most relevant to banks and corporate treasury teams. The core lesson: the technology layer is where the similarities end. What matters is where the money sleeps at night.
Why this distinction matters right now
The stakes are no longer theoretical. According to CoinDesk reporting on RWA.xyz data from July 2026, total stablecoin market capitalization stands around the $300 billion mark, even after shedding roughly $10 billion from its May peak, the sector's largest drawdown in nearly four years. A market of that size sits squarely on the radar of prudential regulators, and it explains why banks are racing to launch tokenized deposit projects rather than watching from the sidelines. Two instruments, two legal universes
A regulated fiat-backed stablecoin is a digital bearer instrument. Whoever holds the token owns the value, much like cash or a casino chip. It moves peer-to-peer on public blockchains such as Ethereum or Solana, without permission from the issuer. The reserves backing it (cash equivalents, reverse repos, short-dated Treasuries) sit in bankruptcy-remote structures outside any bank's lending book. There's no deposit insurance and no automatic central bank backstop. The chip is only as good as the vault behind it.
A tokenized deposit is the opposite construction. It's an account-based claim tied to a verified identity, circulating on permissioned networks restricted to KYC-cleared institutional participants. The underlying money never leaves the issuing bank's balance sheet, so it keeps funding mortgages and business loans while the token acts as a programmable wrapper. Because it's legally still a deposit, it keeps deposit insurance, discount-window access, and the full commercial banking rulebook. If the stablecoin is a casino chip, the tokenized deposit is an automated digital checkbook.
The research also flags a subtler distinction worth knowing: a "tokenized bank deposit" mirrors an off-chain account, while a "deposit token" is minted natively on-chain and settles there directly. Vendors blur this line constantly.
The $50,000 test
Abstractions dissolve quickly when you trace an actual payment. The research walks a hypothetical corporate treasurer settling a $50,000 cross-border invoice through three rails, and the differences are stark.

The stablecoin route delivers the token in seconds, around the clock. But the recipient still has to convert it back to usable fiat to pay taxes and salaries, and that off-ramp step reintroduces the cut-off times, liquidity constraints, and correspondent delays the token was supposed to escape. The research calls this the point where the illusion of real-time settlement breaks. Interestingly, even a fully chartered bank issuing the token doesn't change this. SoFi's sofiUSD, launched in late 2025, is minted by a national bank yet behaves as a bearer instrument on public chains, with reserves segregated in the bank's Federal Reserve master account and yield to holders prohibited under the GENIUS Act.
The tokenized deposit route settles on multi-issuer platforms such as Japan’s DCJPY network (operated by DeCurret DCP). Participating banks convert conventional deposits into tokenized equivalents recorded on a shared ledger; smart contracts then handle issuance, transfer and redemption in a standardised way so that the tokens move between institutions while remaining direct liabilities of the issuing banks. The interbank leg can achieve simultaneous finality (including, where available, against wholesale central bank money). The recipient holds fully usable, deposit-insured bank money the moment the transaction completes. No off-ramp is required because the funds never leave the banking system.
The fast payment route feels instant to the user, but the interbank settlement is deferred and netted through the central bank's RTGS system, backed by prefunded accounts. That deferred credit exposure is exactly why these systems carry hard transaction caps, pushing high-value corporate flows back onto batch systems bound by banking hours.
The narrow banking problem underneath it all
The macroeconomic section of the research is where the two designs really diverge. Commercial banks fund long-term lending with sticky, low-cost deposits. If stablecoins pull deposits out of banks at scale, that money gets parked in fully reserved liquid assets and effectively removed from the credit-creating economy. Banks would have to replace it with wholesale funding, which Basel III treats punitively through the LCR and NSFR ratios.
ECB-derived estimates suggest the effect is nonlinear: a $100 billion migration of deposits into stablecoins could shrink bank lending by as much as $50 billion. It also notes a monetary sovereignty angle, especially for emerging markets, where dollar-denominated stablecoins can import US monetary conditions regardless of what the local central bank does.
Tokenized deposits sidestep this entire problem by design. The liabilities stay on bank balance sheets, credit creation continues, and monetary policy transmission stays intact. That's why the research frames tokenized deposits less as an upgrade and more as the banking sector's defensive strategy against disintermediation.
Three regulatory strategies, one fragmented map
The regulatory responses split along strategic lines. The United States, through the GENIUS Act passed in July 2025, embraced private stablecoins on terms that serve the dollar: strict one-to-one backing in Treasuries turns issuers into large, price-insensitive buyers of US government debt while exporting dollar liquidity across permissionless networks. The European Union went the other way. MiCA regulates stablecoins as e-money tokens or asset-referenced tokens, favors licensed credit institutions as issuers, and the ECB's Appia project aims to keep central bank money, not offshore dollar tokens, as the settlement anchor for European tokenized markets. The BIS, for its part, critiques stablecoins on singleness, elasticity, and integrity grounds and champions the unified ledger concept behind Project Agorá, though industry voices counter that the BIS measures stablecoins against an idealized system whose "singleness" already breaks for real users through ATM fees and FX spreads.

What this means for each stakeholder
Banks face a strategic rather than technical decision. Tokenized deposits let them offer programmability and atomic settlement without giving up their funding model, but the research is blunt that legacy batch-processing cores are incompatible with 24/7 atomic settlement, which implies real infrastructure investment.
Corporate treasurers gain options and complexity in equal measure. Stablecoins solve 24/7 portability but fragment across incompatible chains, carry bearer-instrument compliance exposure, and can't pay yield under the GENIUS Act, which makes them poor vehicles for parking large balances. Tokenized deposits keep funds yield-bearing and insured but remain confined to permissioned institutional networks.
Regulators and central banks are effectively choosing between accommodating private digital dollars, containing them, or building public alternatives, and the three largest jurisdictions have each picked a different answer.
Stablecoin issuers operating under the new frameworks inherit a structural role as buyers of short-term government debt, tying their growth to sovereign funding dynamics in a way few other private firms experience.
The takeaway: orchestration beats prediction
Research resists the winner-take-all framing, and we think that's the right call. Fast payment systems already serve low-value retail flows well. Stablecoins have proven their utility for permissionless global transfer and dollar access. Tokenized deposits are positioned to run the atomic settlement engines of wholesale finance. These aren't three contestants for one prize; they're three rails optimized for different jobs, and the value will accrue to institutions that can move liquidity across all of them. That's consistent with what we saw in the Kinexys and MIT work on what still worries the first bank to put dollars on a public blockchain: the open questions are about coordination between systems, not the superiority of any single one.
The practical question for 2026 isn't "which form of digital money wins." It's "who can route a payment across all three without losing speed, compliance, or yield along the way."
